The Counseling Center offers a database of mental health providers in the Chicago area for students searching for mental health services off campus, organized by health insurance and by specialized type of treatment. Open as many tabs as you like at once and run a search for what you’re looking for, or just browse.

Many of these providers accept health insurance or offer reduced fees based on your income. It is important to verify provider information and contact your insurance company to confirm your coverage for that particular provider. If you are a provider and would like to be added to our database, please contact our case manager. He will reach out to set up a meeting to see your values and or services align with that our students’ needs. Please note, at this time we are mostly looking for providers that accept multiple insurances and also provide specialty services.

Sliding Scale or No Cost

What is a sliding scale?

Some providers offer what is called a “sliding scale,” which means that the fee per session is based on household income and ability to pay. This can sometimes be a more affordable way for students who do not have insurance or prefer not to use their insurance to access care. The fee ranges listed below are subject to change.

Getting Connected Using Campus Care

For Individual, Relationship, and Group Therapy

Campus Care is essentially an HMO insurance, which means that all referrals to a specialist provider must be authorized by a primary care provider (PCP). In order to access mental health treatment using your Campus Care insurance, you will need to speak with a primary care physician at UIC Family Medicine (312) 996-2901 about your mental health concerns. Your PCP will authorize and provide referrals that accept Campus Care. If you do not have a PCP yet, you can let Family Medicine know that you are trying to establish care because you are looking to obtain referrals for mental health services in the community.

A Licensed Clinical Social Worker (or other licensed clinical professional) at Family Medicine could provide some very brief individual therapy sessions through the Collaborative Care Model (if recommended). This form of clinical support would occur while the PCP connects you to in-network referrals in the community. You can request this service through your PCP as well.

Psychiatry and testing services are available through Campus Care at the Neuropsychiatric Institute (NPI), which is located on the west side of campus on 912 S. Wood Street. You will still have to contact your PCP at Family Medicine to receive authorization for these services.

Substance abuse/addiction treatment is available through Campus Care at the Neuropsychiatric Institute (NPI), which is located on the west side of campus on 912 S. Wood Street and at Gateway Foundation in River North. You will still have to contact your PCP at Family Medicine to receive authorization for these services.

Out-of-State Students

Per the Campus Care website: “Students who are out of state: you will need to contact your primary care provider at your UI campus Primary Care Center to request a referral for care that is in the area where you are living currently.

Students who are in Illinois or Indiana: you can still utilize telehealth appointments with your Campus Care Primary Care provider. However, you must update your home address in your UI Health MyChart to your address in Illinois or Indiana in order for a physician to provide treatment.

Out of Network Care:

Please contact your primary care physician at Family Medicine for direction on all non-emergency care. Out-of-network care authorized by your in-network primary care physician will be assessed at an in-network cost share and copayment. All members must establish a provider relationship prior to any referrals or treatment. This can currently be done remotely via a telehealth visit. Call your PCP for an appointment.
